Arrival and Dismissal Procedures

Car Riders

Enter the campus making a right from Stillwater Avenue.  Per safety recommendations from the Stamford Police Department, there will be no entry via making a left turn from the Hospital side.  This area will be blocked by cones during arrival and dismissal.

Arrival:  Stay in the car rider line and staff will be available to assist students by opening the car door.  K-2 students will enter by parent drop off through Kindergarten Hallway and grades 3-5 students will enter through the Main Entrance.

Dismissal: Students will be brought to the gymnasium to wait for their name to be called. Staff will be outside with walkies announcing the names of students to exit the gym and be escorted to their cars. Note: We will be calling names this year and no longer using the “number system.”

Car Rider Guidelines-Please keep the following in mind:

  1. All students being picked up by car will be required to enter through the car rider line.

  2. For curbside drop off and pick up, parents are required to pull all the way down to the last gymnasium door.

  3. Please wait in your automobile for your child(ren) to be brought to your car.

  4. Staff members will open doors to assist students on “curbside-(right passenger side only).”

  5. Parents will not be permitted to park on campus during arrival and dismissal.

  6. Please do not park or drive your car in the bus loop at the front of our school as this constitutes a potential safety problem.

Walkers

Arrival/Dismissal:  Students walking to school will enter and exit by the playgrounds on the field side of the school.  Students must be accompanied by an adult.  Staff will be outside to receive students into the building at 8:45a.m. and dismiss beginning at 3:20p.m.  Students must be walked by an adult unless they are in 5th grade.

Bus Riders

Bus services are available for students residing in Stamford according to Stamford Public Schools Policy.  Bus assignments (stop and time) will be listed in the parent portal.

Bus transportation is provided for in-district students who meet the following criteria:

  • Elementary students living 1 mile or more from school

  • Any student whose IEP indicates special education transportation

Transportation is provided based on the family's registered address.  Following district policy transportation is not provided to caregivers, family members or work locations and students will only be allowed to ride their assigned bus.  Students are required to be at their bus stop 10 minutes prior to the scheduled pick-up time. During the first few weeks buses may be delayed, after that time they settle in and run closer to the posted schedule.  The transportation department or school will inform everyone if changes are made but keep in mind all routes are subject to change. Changes can and will be made throughout the school year.  Families should subscribe to the following App to track their child’s bus.

Bus Arrival/Dismissal

Students should be in the company of an adult while waiting for the morning pick-up and afternoon drop-off.  Students will be carefully supervised while they are lined up and loaded on and off of the bus in the bus loop by supervisory staff at the school.  Students will be dropped off in the afternoon at their stop, unless they are in kindergarten, whether a parent or guardian is there or not.  If a parent is not at the stop, the bus driver will finish the route and return to the school or to the transportation department with the student, who will wait there to be picked up.  All students will be given a bus information tag from the school which will be placed on their backpack.

Please review the following bus rules with your child:

- All students must stay in their seats and face forward while the bus is moving.

- Food and drink are prohibited on the bus.

- Students are expected to follow the same rules on the bus as if they were in their classrooms (such as keeping their hands to themselves, using appropriate language).

Early Pick-up

We ask that you avoid early pick-ups from school as much as possible. If you must pick-up early, you need to pick-up before 3:00pm in the Front Entrance. Once the dismissal process is underway, we will ask you to wait until regular dismissal time to avoid disruptions.  Please do not pick-up students from the office simply to avoid dismissal traffic.

Change of Dismissal Procedures

If a child has permission to go home with another child, the parents or guardians must write a note to this effect to the home base teachers.  Students are not permitted to go home with other students by bus if they do not ride that bus normally. Please state who is visiting whom and who will be responsible for the transportation.  Phone confirmations are not encouraged.  No child will be allowed to change dismissal plans unless the parents have directly contacted the school.

Before/After School Programs

Westover hosts before and after school tutoring and enrichment programs.  More information about these specific programs will be provided to parents of eligible students.

Bus transportation is provided to many after school programs such as YMCA, Yerwood, Boys and Girls Club, JCC, etc.  Please contact the specific program for more information.
