What is CKLA?
Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA) is a well-rounded literacy program designed to help students build strong reading, writing, and knowledge skills. Starting in grades 3–5, CKLA uses original, carefully chosen texts to expand students' understanding of science, social studies, and the arts. The curriculum is thoughtfully designed so that children can dive deep into subjects and see how different topics connect, even those not typically covered in other elementary literacy programs.
Building Strong Knowledge
CKLA helps students build a solid foundation in subjects like history, science, literature, and the arts by building on what they've already learned. For example, a student might first learn about how the heart pumps blood and then, in later grades, explore the circulatory system in more detail. This approach helps kids remember and build on what they’ve learned over the years. The curriculum is designed so that each topic connects smoothly with others, both within the same grade and across different grades. CKLA also includes "pause points," giving students time to think about and deepen their understanding. Daily writing tasks are directly related to the texts and subjects they are studying, helping reinforce their learning.
Foundational Reading Skills
For younger students in PreK–2, CKLA offers a structured reading program focused on building strong reading skills. Teachers regularly assess students' progress and provide targeted lessons to meet their needs. The program includes engaging stories that help children practice phonics and develop the ability to read fluently. As students progress into the higher elementary grades, they continue to build on these skills through a variety of reading passages linked to the topics they’re exploring.
Access to Challenging Texts
CKLA ensures that students are well-prepared to tackle more complex reading materials as they advance. The curriculum is designed so that each year builds on the last, giving students the tools and confidence to understand increasingly difficult texts. Classes work together on grade-level reading assignments, with plenty of support and resources to help every student succeed. This approach not only helps kids learn about a wide range of topics but also encourages them to keep going when faced with challenging material.
Each student’s path toward “reading to learn” is unique. At Westover, we use Core5 as a support to develop a student’s agency and growth mindset, giving students a choice over their path and pace through the program, along with awareness and ownership of performance and progress. Students and teachers meet regularly to monitor the student's progress and make adjustments. If you are interested in learning more about Lexia Core 5 reading please click this link Core 5
